Lumina and Habitica compared

Habitica alternative: playful, with no health points

Habitica turns your tasks into a retro role-playing game: avatar, gold, gear, quests with friends. Lumina keeps the fun of checking things off, with XP, streaks and companions, but no battles or damage, and adds your notes and Google Calendar. These are two different approaches, and neither is better for everyone.

The short answer

If the game is what keeps you going, if you want your avatar, your party and your quests, keep Habitica: nothing in Lumina replaces that. If you mainly want an app to organize your days, where a missed habit has no consequence in a game, Lumina will probably suit you better.

Both are free to start, so you can try them side by side.

When to keep Habitica

If Habitica keeps you on track with your habits, that’s already a win. It remains the right choice in these cases:

  • The game motivates you. Avatar, classes, gear, pets and quests: Lumina has companions and achievements, but no adventure to follow.
  • Peer pressure helps you. In a Habitica Party, your missed Dailies can also hurt the others during a quest. Some people find that’s exactly the push they need.
  • You want habits to avoid. Habitica handles negative habits (smoking, biting nails) with a minus button. Lumina only tracks what you want to do.
  • You like community Challenges. Habitica Challenges add tasks to your list and put Gems at stake.
  • Open source matters to you. Habitica publishes its code; Lumina doesn’t.
  • You want a native iPhone app or a Wear OS app. Lumina goes through the web app on iPhone and has no watch app.

When Lumina is the better fit

Lumina is worth a look if the game side is fun, but you don’t want it to take over:

  • Damage discourages you. In Lumina, a bad week means a streak back at zero. No level or gold to lose.
  • You want your day in one place. Tasks, habits, linked notes, Google Calendar and a Pomodoro timer are in the same app.
  • You share tasks for free. The free version lets you create one group and join as many as you want, with shared tasks and roles.
  • You want to see your progress. Completion rate, best streaks and perfect days are shown in the app.
  • You don’t feel like creating an account. Lumina works offline and without signing up, in 6 languages.
  • You run a class or a work team. Groups stay simple: tasks, roles and everyone’s progress. For school, see the student planner.

Moving from Habitica to Lumina

Lumina doesn’t import Habitica data: you recreate what you want to keep. Here’s how things map:

  • Dailies: a habit if you want to follow a streak, otherwise a recurring task.
  • Positive Habits: a habit with a daily goal, for example 4 glasses of water.
  • To Do’s: tasks, with or without a date.
  • Negative Habits: no equivalent. Try rephrasing them as a habit to keep (“No screens after 11 p.m.”).

The free version tracks 3 habits. Start with the three that matter most; that’s also a good way to see whether you miss the game. Habitica lets you export your tasks from its website settings, so you keep a record.
